League Advocacy

Understand, Organize, Change the World

Before taking a position on an issue, the League of Women Voters undertakes a thorough process to study the issue, examine different aspects of it, discuss pro's and con's, and finally, come to a consensus about policy. These "consensus studies" are conducted nationwide. Local Leagues are actively involved in studying the issue, reaching a consensus locally, reporting the results up the chain, and thereby contributing to the resulting national positions.

The League of Women Voters has taken positions on numerous issues related to voting rights, including expanding voter access, redistricting, money in politics, and fighting voter suppression. The League has also taken positions on health care reform, the environment, the US Census, and immigration.

It Starts at Home

Our local Central Kane County League works daily at the grassroots level in support of the positions published by our national and state League counterparts. In addition, from time to time, circumstances warrant our local League to study an issue from a local perspective and to adopt a local position that complements the state and national Leagues' published positions. Following are examples of local positions our League has adopted after local study:

  • Affordable Housing:  The Central Kane County League supports governmental and community efforts to ensure affordable, safe and decent housing for the citizens of our towns.
  • Financing of Public Higher Education:  The Central Kane County League supports the sustained allocation of state funds for public higher education.
  • Mental/Behavioral Health and Intellectual/Developmental Disability: The League supports a fully funded comprehensive and coordinated system of treatment, supports, and services for people with mental and behavioral health challenges and/or intellectual/developmental disabilities throughout Kane County.

Positions taken by the League of Women Voters at the local, state, and national level serve as inspiration for our members and guide much of the work done by League members and volunteers.
