About this event
REGISTER NOW TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION STUDY
Come one, come all! We would like to invite you to be part of the important process of updating the League's positions related to gun violence prevention!
The foundations of the League of Women Voters are (1) voter service and (2) advocacy. As LWV members, our advocacy is focused on issues that we have carefully studied. Once completed, a LWV issue study results in a clearly articulated position that we can then use to support our words and actions. LWV issue studies are always a grassroots effort, involving chapter members gathering to discuss and to create a consensus to submit.
The prevalence of guns in our society has been a decades-long discussion at all levels of the League of Women Voters. LWV of Illinois last updated their position on Gun Violence Prevention in 1998. In the 2025 Illinois legislative session this past spring, there were over 80 pieces of legislation focused on this topic. By participating in this initiative, you will be joining with local League members and Illinois LWV chapters to update the LWVIL position through study and consensus.
Members from the LWVCKC, LWV Elgin Area, and LWV DeKalb County will study and discuss the issue, and then each of the Leagues will separately reach consensus and submit their Consensus Document to LWVIL.
Consensus does not mean unanimous agreement, but rather reflects a general agreement among chapter members. There are three choices in answering a study question: Yes, Neutral, or No. We record accepting and dissenting opinions for a clear record of our submitted consensus.
This study will take place over the course of three virtual meetings:
You will need to register for each of these meetings separately.
After you register, we will send you additional documentation and a Zoom link to use the day of the meeting. In the meantime, you can go to the LWVIL Where We Stand and the LWVUS Impact on Issues documents to familiarize yourself with current positions on Gun Violence Prevention and Assault Weapons Control.
